Getting Your Home In Shape This Year
We’re part way through January and many of us are still figuring out what we want to achieve this year. Now, there are countless options that you could choose. You may be thinking of focusing on your exercise routine, or maybe to focus on your diet. You could quit a bad habit. The list goes on. But why not focus on your home this year? Your home is the space you spend a whole lot of your time in. It’s a place where you hang out with family and friends. Where you retire when you’re tired and stressed. The place you want to relax when you want some downtime. It’s where you cook. It’s where you sleep. For some of us, it’s now where we work. Working on it can help to improve your day to day life. Here are some suggestions you can try out or take into consideration!

Declutter
A good first step to take is decluttering. All of us have items building up in our home that we don’t use or have much sentimental value for. Make sure to go through your belongings and decide what you want to keep and what you don’t. Make sure to dispose of the items you don’t want to keep responsibly. You could find a lot of success in selling items of value on sites like eBay, donating items to charity stores or simply recycling. It’s also worth checking if friends or family want any of the items you’re planning on getting rid of – you never know, someone might love them!
Redecorate
Redecorating doesn’t have to be particularly costly or time consuming, just a quick lick of paint can make all the difference to the look and feel of any space in your property. Even if you stick to a fresh coat of the same colour, you can see a big difference, with the room looking brighter and fresher. Remember that painting light neutral colours that are close to the colour of the ceiling and skirting boards tends to be easiest. But you can get a good finish when using layers of brighter or bolder colours. Make sure to have all the necessary equipment if you decide to go ahead with this yourself. Whether that’s trays, rollers, tools from Glue Guns Direct or anything else. If you’re lacking confidence in your redecoration efforts, you can always use professional painters and decorators. They’ll be able to give your home a professional finish.
Renovations
If you’re up for a bigger project, you might want to consider some home renovations. This is where you have the structure of your property professionally altered to better meet your needs and preferences. Of course, before getting started on any renovations, make sure that you can get planning permission. This will ensure that you don’t have to revert the changes later down the line.
- Extensions – if you’d like more room in your home, an extension can be a good idea for you. You could opt for a single floor extension or a double floor extension. Of course, first you need to check that you have sufficient space for an extension to be added to your property. You need space around your home that you’re willing to sacrifice. Remember that extensions aren’t possible for middle terraced homes or if do not actually own the land surrounding the property.
- Loft Conversion – if you don’t have the land available for an extension, you could consider converting disused space in your home. For many people, this is the loft or “attic”. When most people only use this space to store old belongings, you could turn it into a functional and comfortable room – whether that’s a home office, a guest room or anything else.
- An En Suite – if you live alone, one bathroom is fine. Two people can often share. But as soon as you start trying to fit more people into a home, you will generally find bickering over the bathroom – especially during peak times like the morning or before going out to an event together. This is where an en suite could be a good renovation. You will just need to make sure that the proper plumbing can be put into place in the space you want your ensuite to be.
Hopefully, at least one of the ideas highlighted above will tick your boxes and provide you with some inspiration. Each could make all the difference to your home and make it the perfect living space going forward!
